FAQs: About MyWorks
Who publishes MyWorks?
MyWorks is an exciting new online assessment solution from Boardworks – publisher of interactive teaching resources designed to harness the teaching potential of your school’s technology to the full. You can find out more about Boardworks by visiting www.boardworks.co.uk or by following us on Twitter @BoardworksLtd.
Boardworks whole-class teaching resources are now used on interactive whiteboards, PCs and projectors in over 85% of secondary schools in the UK, and MyWorks aims to further push your school’s technology by helping you better utilise your school network and students’ access to internet at home or on their personal laptops.
How long do MyWorks quizzes take to complete?
• Mini quizzes make up the largest proportion of a MyWorks product. Mini quizzes comprise 25 questions and take approximately 15 minutes to complete.
• Skills and extension quizzes comprise 30 marks and take approximately 20 minutes to complete.
• Exam and Super quizzes comprise between 45 and 50 marks and take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
Can I access MyWorks anywhere?
Yes – teachers and students can access MyWorks and assessments on any computer with an internet connection and Adobe Flash player installed (we recommend the latest version which you can download from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/).
Can parents access MyWorks?
Students are able to share their results with parents when they are logged in to the system or can print out reports at the end of a quiz.
For teachers, MyWorks can provide a useful summary of a student’s progress over a term for parent’s evenings and reports.
How is MyWorks formative?
MyWorks is formative because it teaches and guides students through their assessments and helps boost their knowledge in areas in which they are weaker.
At the end of each question, a feedback screen congratulates correct answers and gives advice on incorrect answers. Feedback screens also allow students to view the correct answers.
In many quizzes, incorrect answers also bring up a recap page that provides all the information students need to answer the question in the future – helping to reinforce their knowledge in a specific topic area.
Students also have access to revision material before or after quizzes and can even ‘rate’ their confidence after completing a revision exercise. When revising, they can then go back to revision material and filter by their confidence level to help target their areas for improvement.
How is MyWorks summative?
MyWorks includes super quizzes that cover larger topic areas, helping students summarize their own learning, and giving teachers an indication of areas for improvement.
Similar to super quizzes, exam quizzes are provided in MyWorks KS4 products and provide syllabus-specific assessments that prepare students for their GCSEs.
Does MyWorks cover the curriculum I use?
Yes. Every MyWorks product is mapped to the major exam boards and curriculums for your subject and level. They also support and complement the curriculum coverage provided by Boardworks in-class teaching resources.
In the product you can search for and assign quizzes by curriculum, National Curriculum Level, Framework and Programme of Study.
How does MyWorks support APP?
MyWorks quizzes are mapped to specific APP Assessment Focuses. This means you can search, filter and set homework and assessments by the exact Assessment Focus you want to target, and then use MyWorks reporting features to make judgements on how and where your students are progressing and where they need to improve.
Can I access MyWorks offline?
An internet connection is required for most functions such as adding students, searching for and assigning quizzes, and retrieving results. It is possible however, to export student scores as an Excel file which you can keep for your own reference.
There is also a VLE version of MyWorks that allows teachers and students to access MyWorks quizzes through their school VLE; either offline across the school network, or online through your VLE portal when away from school.
How many users and computers does a licence cover?
Purchasing a subscription gives you unlimited access to MyWorks for the duration of the period. You can add as many student or teachers as you need and students can access their assessments at any time, on any computer with an internet connection.
I already own Boardworks whole-class PowerPoint resources, how does MyWorks complement them?
If you subscribe to a MyWorks product, you will find that the topic area and unit structure matches very closely to the structure of the relevant Boardworks whole-class PowerPoint resources you may already own.
This means the two products complement each other perfectly – for example you could teach a class aided by a particular Boardworks presentation, and then assess your pupil’s knowledge of that topic by assigning one or more relevant quizzes from the MyWorks menu.
